But what, exactly, is home? A country, a feeling or sensation, a desire? Is it a landscape, a dialect, a traditional food, or smells and sounds, or the people that live in one's homeland? Most likely it's a little bit of all these things, for which we all have a yearning. Doesn't home mean, of all things, familiarity? Music as an „emotional art“ is particularly apt to become absorbed in associations of home: For whole generations, folk songs and dances have quite often expressed the notion of home. Béla Bartók, who was closely tied to his native country, had been collecting and researching the folk melodies of Hungary, and as a quasi-homage to his native country he incorporated many of these folk elements into his works. Can we think of a nicer commitment to one's home country? Ewa Kupiec, too, includes in her recital some such works of commitment that speak of home.
